This is a model of the main building of the silk mill as it probably looked when completed in the early 1720s. It was known as the 'Italian Works' because it contained 12 silk throwing machines of the design pirated from Piedmont in northern Italy by John Lombe.
The model was built to a scale of 7mm = 1 foot by Paul Davison and Roger Wakefield.
The details of the building have been taken from the first known pictures of the Lombe mills and an early description by one of the mill owners. The cut-away in one side shows how the waterwheel was positioned to drive the machinery inside.
